Get Your Champagne on Sydney! #MIM2011

A headless @frenchwineman serving me Champagne Bereche at Felix

When you talk about alcohol for a living, you rarely get to drink. It’s quite usual that you spit at events so that your audience doesn’t have to. Feeling like you’ve been let loose in a candy shop to taste as you please (and swallow!) is a rare thing indeed.

However the annual champagne tasting that March Into Merivale puts on every year (guided by sommelier extraordinaire Franck Moreau) is just one such occasion. So grab some friends or colleagues and head down to Ivy complex tonight for a champagne experience to remember.

Yes people that’s 21 different champagne producers on pouring behind the tasting tables (well their Australian ambassadors anyway) and trayfuls of delicious canapes by Ivy Uccello served up poolside… tonight its heaven on a plate for the people a la Justin Hemmes style.

I always enjoy these champagne social gatherings with friends old and new. There is nothing quite like those bubbles for efficient enjoyable social lubrication. Here’s my Top 10 picks from the champagne tasting list tonight, just to whet your appetite. Given that many small grower champagnes are often a little expensive to experiment with in retail, I’ve included them all, along with 5 classic favourites worth keeping your palate clean for tonight.

This wine list is in a logical tasting order – that I will be following tonight (crowds permitting). Champagne tasting notes and details of all the champagnes shown tonight will be posted on this blog after the event – so please come back next week.
