”A Little Party Never Killed Nobody” – Champagne & the Roaring Twenties

Widely regarded as one of the greatest American novels which has captivated readers ever since it was first published in 1925, Fitzgerald’s torrid tale of tragic love set in the Roaring Twenties; a period of excessive, wealth, glitz and glamour from bootlegging to ballroom dancing, cleverly anticipated the Wall St Crash of 1929.

The Great Gatsby is the fascinating story of a slickly confident millionaire who hosts lavish champagne fuelled parties every Saturday night at his opulent Long Island mansion, but as we soon discover, allied war hero Jay Gatsby is not exactly what he seems. All we know for certain is that his real name is James Gatz, that he’s a self-made man; quite possibly a conman and that he’s madly in love with married socialite Daisy Buchanan.

As actor Leonardo DiCaprio (who plays Gatsby in the latest movie) explains “Having made an immense fortune in the underworld overnight, Gatsby is desperately trying to be accepted by the blue-blood aristocracy of the East Coast. The idea of being able to reinvent yourself, like Gatsby did, is something anyone can identify with.” Another modern day Gatsby like figure American rap star and business mogul Jay Z was brought in to score the film music ”Baz wanted to make a link between Twenties jazz and contemporary hip-hop both being types of urban music. So I introduced him to Jay-Z.” adds DiCaprio.

Film director Baz Luhrmann (who co-wrote the screenplay) is adamant that Fitzgerald’s novel is as relevant now as it’s ever been. ‘In that moment before the financial crisis of 2008, I remember thinking that something wasn’t quite right. The greed and wealth were very reminiscent of The Great Gatsby. I thought, The time is right to make this film.”

Five years on and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will open the 2013 Cannes Film Festival on May 15th. Joining the Australian film director on the red carpet in Cannes will be his old protege Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he first directed in 1996’s Romeo + Juliet. ”DiCaprio was born to play Gatsby” added Luhrmann “He’s a perfect combination of old-fashioned movie star and modern playboy.”

The Great Gatsby is visually stunning but has also been shot in 3D. Luhrmann says this wasn’t done to enhance the already eye-popping party scenes, but to heighten the emotional experience of this movie.

Cannes, Moet & Gatsby - The Perfect Champagne Trifecta

With the most anticipated film of the year raising the curtain at the world’s most glamorous film festival, the location is especially poignant, as Fitzgerald wrote large parts of The Great Gatsby from his villa at Saint-Raphaël, just along the coast from Cannes. Lead actor DiCaprio may have previously shown a personal preference for Champagne Armand de Brignac Gold, but the world’s most popular Champagne Moet & Chandon, which has long been associated with Hollywood, is the official champagne sponsor of The Great Gatsby – so watch this space for news of upcoming Gatsby themed champagne special events and celebrations with Moet & Chandon.

The Great Gatsby will be released in UK cinemas on May 16th and in Australia on May 30th 2013.

Bienvenue a Brasserie Ananas!

First discovered in the Indies in 1493 by Columbus (who presented it to the Spanish Royal Court back in Europe) the rare and exotic pineapple fruit soon became associated with the return of ships from extended voyages. How fitting that this traditional symbol of warm welcome and caribbean style hospitality has now found its spiritual home on Sydney harbour within the historical Rocks precinct .

Launched in September 2012, Brasserie Ananas (part of the Urban Purveyor Group which also includes Sake, The Cut and the eponymous Bavarian Bier Cafe outlets) is a glamorous gilt edged but laid back 1930s Parisian style brasserie with lots to offer both the busy business-lunch executive set and the hip after work crowd.

De Cinq a Sept: Champagne Marc w/salted cod brandade

De Cinq a Sept

Recalling the classic French tradition of romantic assignations between the office and family dinner (where men would visit their mistresses de cinq a sept heures) and accompanied by cool French tunes, Brasserie Ananas now serves up a daily dose of tantalizing titbits including cocktails and a selection of champagnes by the glass (from $15) matched to delicious blackboard specials.

What a great value way to kick off any significant Sydney celebration night or even just wind down with friends and colleagues after a hard day in the office. What’s more the canapé selection and fresh fruit de mer platters add a sense of delicious decadence to your sensory experience at any time of day.

From left to right: Snails w/herb butter, seared scallops w/caramelised veal sweetbread, whole flounder w/lemon caper butter, autmumn mushroom pappardelle w/ warm hen's egg & black truffle

Plats du Jour

Wine geeks will love the full beverage list available on ipad to peruse at your leisure, but its the well designed compact one page food menu at Brasserie Ananas which really impressed me. From fresh lobster, crab, oysters and even snails from the sea to cape grim steak and braised lamb shoulder from the land - whether you just fancy a little grazing, sharing some impressive plats pour deux or a full five course sit down extravaganza, Brasserie Ananas has got you covered. Main courses range from $23 – $42. Just like the food, the staff are warm and friendly, and even though Ananas is not a formal fine dining restaurant, each dish is hand finished at the table with tender loving care. Did I also mention the salted caramel eclair dessert (only $10) which was just to die for?!

Joyeux Fete des Meres!

Although festivals in honour of women’s fertility date all the day back to ancient Greece, did you know that France, the birthplace of Champagne, only celebrated its first Mothers Day in 1918, under the influence of the American GIs who had been stationed there during World War I? Mothers Day became official in 1920, because at that time the government was focused on the re-population of post war France. In those days Mothers who gave birth to four or five children were awarded a bronze medal. For having six or seven children the mother would receive a silver medal, and eight or more offspring was rewarded with a gold medal.

Thankfully since the Vichy government instituted the National Day of Mothers (Fete Des Meres) in 1945, French mums now receive flowers, cards and perfumes, and usually a grand family dinner in their honour. Champagne is of course the wine of choice at these annual celebrations all over the world and these days you can even send your mum champagne through the post – so there’s no excuse not to spoil her with festive fizz!

From the outside you might construe this is just a Woolahara pub with a misspelt French name, but as soon as you cross the threshold of One Moncur the fabulous line up of champagne labels winking at you from behind the huge illuminated marble top mirrored bar makes it immediately obvious you’re not in Kansas anymore Toto – this is a Centennial park-side slice of champagne heaven (and yes they do cater for take-away picnics too).

With 30 different champagnes on offer by the bottle (of which half dozen by the glass from grower to grande maison – $18 – $25) Sydney’s answer to New York’s Flute champagne speakeasy is certainly a welcome effervescent addition to Sydney’s vibrant small bar scene. A concise bar menu includes tasty charcuterie share plates from Victor Churchill and Sydney Rock oysters from the Clyde River, but since the recent arrival of French chef Sebastian Curd (ex Steel and Pony), despite the non-existent kitchen space, the food offering has gone up a gear and this bar definitely has the potential to become a signature local dining destination. Take a pew along the elegant length of this stylish marble bar, nestle discreetly in a semi-enclosed booth or, if you’re in a gang, huddle comfortably around the private dining top table at the back end of this elongated dining space. There’s something to suit every palate and its wallet – and the natives are all friendly here.

Tasty well-prepared small dishes (available for lunch and dinner Thursday to Sunday) include scallops, seared sliced wagu, marbled beef carpaccio and house-cured salmon (all under $20) but I really came to test-drive One Moncur’s new champagne high tea (available from Friday – Sunday 12 – 5pm).

Accompanied by a selection of twelve different loose leaf teas, One Moncur’s afternoon tea includes finger sandwiches, scones, cakes and macaroons. The lemon herb butter adds a modern twist to the classic cucumber sandwich and the vanilla pods in the chantilly cream served with the scones are also a nice touch. Teetotal version is reasonably priced at $39 per person – but why come to a champagne bar if not to take advantage of fabulous bubbles to add extra pop to your high tea experience?

The Madame’s Tea Menu

Blue swimmer crab, lime, shallots and coriander mayonnasie

‘Classic’ cucumber with lemon herb butter

Poached chicken breast, almonds, creme fraiche and avocado

Scones with organic strawberry conserve and chantilly cream

Selection of fruit muffins and macarons

Served with a glass of NV Champagne Veuve Clicquot $59 per person.

What’s more since One Moncur offer different styles of champagne by the glass, I was also able to match a different champagne to each tier of of The Madame’s Tea Menu – needless to say the results were sensational and I will be back for dinner soon.

Founded in 1760 by Reims magistrate Francois Delamotte, in 1837 one of Champagne’s oldest houses changed its name to “Lanson Pere et Fils” after Francois Delamotte’s son Nicolas Louis (Knight of the Order of Malta) joined forces with farmer’s son and passionate winemaker Jean-Baptiste Lanson and his two sons Victor-Marie and Henri also entered the business. When Nicolas-Louis Delamotte and his wife died the Lanson family gained full control of the company.

From 1855 onwards under Victor-Marie’s leadership, Champagne Lanson increased its sales in continental Europe and in the all important British market – earning its first royal warrant from Queen Victoria in 1860. In 1919 Victor and Henri Lanson joined the business, buying up vineyards and becoming indefatigable globe-trotters, as they set out to make the name of Lanson Black Label familiar to all. Victor Lanson was a noted gastronome and one of the first champagne merchants to start using pinot noir grapes from the Aube in his champagne blends. Lanson’s unique house style (predominantly black grapes and no malolactic fermentation) has always been defined as fruity, fresh and bracingly dry but with enough vinosity and richness to match food: ”I make wine for myself, what I can’t drink, I sell” was Victor Lanson’s professional credo. His long lunches (often taking more than 4 hours) were legendary and always began with a magnum of Black Label.

Chef de Caves Jean Paul Gandon tastes Champagne Lanson Gold Label 2002

In 1959 Victor launched Lanson Gold Label (vintage blend of 50% chardonnay/ 50% pinot noir) which was created as the perfect champagne to accompany a family meal. It is estimated that during his 87 years, Victor consumed at least 70,000 bottles of champagne. Victor had ten children, six of whom followed him into the family business.

In 1961 Lanson was served to President John F. Kennedy and his wife during their visit to Versailles, Lanson was the official champagne for Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and in 2010 the company celebrated its 250th anniversary with a grand party at the Chateau de Versailles. Unfortunately the Lanson family lost control of the business in 1970 and the brand has since changed hands several times and lost its significant vineyard holdings (208 hectares). Miraculously throughout this tumultuous period Lanson has retained the same Chef de Caves – super talented huntsman Jean-Paul Gandon who has been with the company since the 1970s and done a remarkable job as winemaker since 1991.

Since 2006 the business has been guided by the tallest and friendliest man in Champagne, Philippe Baijot (co-creator of modern day Champagne Group Boizel Chanoine with Bruno Paillard and Evelyne Boizel) who has ensured that Lanson’s entry level cuvee Black Label is widely available from London to Sydney at extremely reasonable value for money price points.

Current vintage release Lanson Gold Label 2002 represents exceptional value for any lover of champagne.

“I am very glad to be back here in Queensland for my 16th visit to Australia,” said the Queen when she visited Brisbane and enjoyed High Tea and an overnight stay at 5 star riverside hotel The Stamford Plaza, which had been given this honour after being flooded and closed for months following the catastrophic 2011 Queensland floods. Celebrities from Muhammed Ali, Bono, Cher and Madonna through to Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga have also slept in the Sir Stamford Suite on the 32nd floor of this grand hotel.

Queen Elizabeth’s Stamford High Tea Menu

Served in the hotel lobby and accompanied by elegant strings music every Wednesday – Saturday between 3 – 5pm, The Stamford Brisbane Royal High Tea also features the “Essence of Queensland” – a famous sponge dessert with a twist, created by The Stamford’s pastry chef in honour of Elizabeth II’s most recent visit, which includes limes from the Sunshine Coat, north Queensland bananas and even a drop of Australia’s iconic tipple, Bundaberg Rum.

Alongside decadent cakes and pastries, dainty white crustless sandwiches oozing with cucumber and cream cheese, poached chicken and roquette, dijon mustard and honey roasted ham, accompanied by a fabulous selection of loose leaf teas, await you in this grand colonial style open atrium. The signature Rose with French Vanilla tea is a particular favourite with visitors to wash down those delicious scones.

As always I recommend starting with a glass of champagne – Moet & Chandon($25) is a timeless classic champagne style and the most popular champagne in the world. No doubt Sir Stamford Raffles, the British Empire builder who founded Singapore (for whom this Singapore owned Australia and New Zealand hotel chain is named) would have approved of the tea selection and the lovely china it is served in.

The Stamford High Tea is available to members of the public as well as hotel guests (nb book at least 24hrs in advance). Adults from $45, for reservations phone 07 31005749 or visit www.stamford.com.au/spb

Celebrity Style Bubbles On Any Budget

As Hollywood celebrities walk the red carpet for the 85th Academy Awards, Channel 7 The Morning Show hosts Larry & Kylie are treated to a walk-through selection of Best in Show Bubbles matched to easy at home food fit for any Oscars celebration by Jayne Powell (aka Champagne Jayne) 2012 Champagne Educator of the Year, award-winning author and real life Champagne Dame (Dame Chevalier).

Wine No 1: Bay of Fires Tasmanian Cuvee Rose (AU$25)

Great Value/Quality price point Tasmanian sparkling rose made by award-winning winemaker Peter Dredge. Crisp and persistent with rich strawberry fruits and snappy citrus flavours.

Food matching: the perfect party match with oysters or smoked salmon and creme fraiche on blinis

Wine No 2: Champagne Paul Bara Grand Cru Rose (AU$75)

What’s not to love about this excellent quality well priced small grower rose champagne which comes from a village called “Bouzy”! Made exclusively from grand cru fruit, this fine rose champagne oozes strawberrys and cream with crisp red fruit flavours and fine acidity which really cries out for food.

Food matching: wonderful match for salmon or duck roast dishes but also the perfect partner in crime for strawberry or raspberry desserts.

Wine No 3: Arras Grand Vintage 2004 (AU$50)

Often beating French champagne in blind tastings this smooth operator is all about subtley and finesse. “Arras” by Australia’s most awarded sparkling winemaker Ed Carr is a very elegant example of vintage sparkling wine made from cool climate Tasmanian premium chardonnay and pinot noir fruit. Amazing pastry and citrus notes on the nose followed rich seductive complex vanilla and yeasty flavours on the palate, nicely backed up by long lingering fine acidity.

Food matching: As a vintage wine aged 7 years on lees before release, Arras 2004 has the body to match main courses like barbequed chicken, lemon pastry based desserts or even something really simple like toffee popcorn. Alternatively enjoy this wine at aperitif time with oysters!

Learn more about House of Arras

Wine No 4: Dom Perignon 2003 (AU$200)

Its incredible to think that the first vintage of Dom Perignon was successfully launched in 1936, right in the middle of the depression era between the first and second world wars, and then went on became a firm favourite with secret agent 007 James Bond in the 1960s. Today Dom Perignon is still a legendary prestige champagne, renowned for its sumptuous yeasty and nutty bouquet and everlasting balanced palate, which seamlessly holds the note between the finesse of chardonnay and the body of pinot noir.

Food matching: Naturally Dom Perignon can accompany any fine meal, but its also simply perfect with sushi, cheese or even nut snacks.

Wine No 5: Armand de Brignac (AU $550)

Gold First released in 2006, thanks to the patronage of superstars from the sport, music and film worlds, NEW prestige cuvee champagne Armand de Brignac (made by the Cattier family) has quickly become one of the most talked about champagne brands in the world. A multi-vintage blend (containing reserve wines aged in oak casks to add even more complexity) Armand de Brignac is a rich, refined and yet powerful style of champagne. Bold and complex on the nose and then peachy on the palate (almost Krug like but without the length) this champagne oozes quality but is very approachable and can be enjoyed with pretty much anything. Voted No 1 champagne in the world in 2010.

Food matching: Anything goes from banana on toast to lemon cheesecake or a nice roast chicken dish. Or just cheese.

Learn more about Champagne Armand de Brignac

Why Match Champagne With Food?

Champagne effortlessly perks up your palate and stimulates your appetite – but did you know that champagne’s best kept secret is that its a much more versatile partner for food than most still wines? Bear in mind that champagne has a natural affinity with the saltiness of fresh seafood and also the sharpness of fresh fruit. In fact champagne is pretty much the only dry wine you can successfully pair with dessert!

By the end of the Academy Awards ceremony all the actors are literally starving so they rush over to the Governor’s Ball and inhale as many Wolfgang Puck canapés as humanly possible at the after show dinner. Over 40 different bite size dishes are fed to 1,600 VIP guests at one of these Oscars banquets, all washed down with magnums of Moet & Chandon Brutal Imperial (Moet has been official Academy Awards champagne sponsor since 2009).

Participants submitted entries and cast votes through the Moet & Chandon USA Facebook page, http://oscarcontest.moet.com, and a specially developed QR code was created for mobile users. The winning cocktail was chosen for its modern combination of flavours which served to highlight the Moet & Chandon Imperial and reflect the elegance of the Academy Awards themselves. As winner of the 2012 Moet Oscar Cocktail Contest, bar tender Adam Seger received an exciting behind-the-scenes Oscar weekend, including a three-night luxury hotel stay and tickets to all the right Oscars parties. His cocktail was served at the Governor’s Ball following the awards presentation.

The Moet Red Carpet Glamour captures the essence of Hollywood glamour with exquisite notes of heady cardamom and kaffir lime that develop a refreshing and harmonious taste.

Fill a chilled Champagne Flute 1/2 way with ice. Stir 1 ounce of Fresh Squeezed Sour Mix and Hum® Botanical Spirit with fresh ice. Strain into Flute to fill 1/2 way. Top with Moet & Chandon Imperial . Garnish with a Single Rose Petal. Continually refresh as you wish with Moet & Chandon Imperial as the Champagne will float on top of the Hum Sour, but its effervescence will deliver Hum’s heady cardamom & Kaffir lime notes. Fresh Squeeze Sour Mix Preparation: Combine 1 cup sugar with 1 cup water until sugar is completely dissolved. Add 1 cup fresh lime juice and 1 cup fresh lemon juice and refrigerate.

I’ve always been a big fan of escapist epicurean experiences. At the end of a hard week there is something quite liberating about stepping out of city mode and straight into the magical wonderland of Mistress Mary Afternoon Tea, courtesy of the fun-loving folk at Hilton Sydney’s award-winning Zeta Bar (named one of Best 50 bars in the world by Drinks International Magazine in 2010).

Every Friday from 15 February starting at 6pm, Zeta’s outdoor terrace will be fancifully transformed into a magical Secret Garden, complete with manicured lawns and cool outdoor furniture – where you can indulge in sweet and savoury treats while listening to cool jazz as you swop frivolous tall tales with cheeky garden gnomes.

Mistress Mary Afternoon Tea

Your fantasy afternoon tea features dainty sandwiches including crab, cucumber and watercress; and house smoked salmon, rocket and cream cheese served on homemade brioche, alongside a selection of delicious macarons, edible pink and white spotted marshmallow toadstools, raspberry mousse and home-baked scones served with rose petal cream. A decadent delight for all the senses worth $45 per person.

To match the sleek surrounds of Secret Garden, each of Zeta’s famous mixologists has also created a special progressive cocktail (AU$18) to complement Mistress Mary Afternoon Tea. Sparkling wines, spirits and seasonal ingredients including summer berries, citrus and garden herbs take centre stage in these creations, but you can also opt for a more class High Tea with a glass of 2009 Chandon vintage brut ($15) or a flute of Champagne Moet & Chandon Brut Imperial ($30) on the side.

The Secret Garden menu also offers 6 specialist cocktails with something for every palate, but my personal favourite by far is the Tweedledum (served punch style presented in a smoking tea pot for two):

Tweedle Dum by Chad Choulai
Inspired by Chad’s two favourite characters from Alice in Wonderland – TweedleDee and TweedleDum, Zeta’s Tweedledum cocktail is a playful pot of tea – full of gin combined with seasonal fresh strawberries, Basil and limoncello and Chandon sparkling wine to top it up, served in matching dainty china cups for two.

Mistress Mary Afternoon Tea, set in the whimsical Secret Garden at Hilton’s Zeta Bar in Sydney, is the perfect restorative remedy to a hard week at work!

Where Fashion Meets Fizz

Since its launch in 2005, Hilton’s Zeta Bar has won multiple awards year on year for its bartenders, playful drinks, cocktail classics and seasonal trend setting concepts. To add extra spice to the Secret Garden recipe, Sydney fashion blogger ‘Sneakypeek’ (aka Monique Freidlander) will be joining The Secret Garden Friday night frivolity to uncover the most fashionable lady on the night who will win prizes from Moët & Chandon.
