Established in the heart of the Marne Valley since the 17th century Champagne Rene Geoffroy is the No 1 grower in Cumieres (the most sun drenched and therefore earliest ripening village in Champagne) Its a family affair, dedicated to making wines with the utmost integrity, and both father and son are known through out the region as craftsmen.
The Geoffroys try to live in harmony with nature (but without the constraints that organic certification would impose) and their concern for sustainable viticulture is expressed through their “integrated pest control” approach in the vineyards, a method based primarily on observation, in order to avoid using chemical weedkillers. Natural plant cover is grown between the vine rows, and organic fertilisers and ploughing used to preserve and strengthen the life of the soil and to encourage the vines to send their roots as deep as possible. Some of Jean- Baptiste’s wines like “Empreinte” are fermented in oak barrels, but none of the Rene Geoffroy champagnes go through malolactic fermentation, so these are all generous, exuberant pinot led champagnes that can age!
Champagne Rene Geoffroy Tasting Notes
Always made from a single vintage (but with different varietal percentages depending on the harvest) vinified in oak barrels and given 5 years on lees to develop a fully autolytic character – this is a stunning champagne and my personal favourite of the house. The nose is complex and the palate always full of lush ripe fruit.
