The Gimonnet family have been growers in Cuis, at the top of the Cotes des Blancs for over two centuries, and producing wines under their own label since the 1930s. They family own 25 hectares of vineyards spread across 1er cru Cuis, and the Grand crus of Cramant and Chouilly. The average age of their vines is 40 years and some are even 90! Third generation winemaker Didier has continued his father’s work in terms of vinifying individual parcels separately in order to later create his seamlessly blended range of blanc de blancs champagnes. In his Top 100 Champagnes guide wine writer Michael Edwards refers to Gimonnet as the “bluest of blue chip chardonnays” whilst top champagne expert and author Tom Stevenson calls Gimonnet “one of Champagne’s greatest exponents of pure chardonnay”.
Champagne Gimonnet eschews the current fashion for producing small single parcel champagnes. This house is much more interested in building a long term loyal and sustainable international customer base. “Fresh and fruity, yet also lacy and showing restrained exuberance” is the immediate description that comes to my mind when thinking of Gimonnet, approachable in style and accessibly priced is the next thing that immediately pops into my head.
As Didier explains (when asked about the fashion for mono cru and single vineyard champagnes) “To put all one’s best wine into one cuvee would detract from the quality of the rest of the range, to the detriment of our customers’ pleasure” To compose his best selling champagne, the entry-level Cuis 1er Cru NV, Didier has to employ all his blending skills to combine four different vintages into a harmonious well-finished and technically perfect champagne that dances on the palate -and he does so with great flair and humility.
