First things First: What’s the difference between champagne and other sparkling wines?
Champagne is a sparkling wine style unique to the champagne region and produced from the classic varieties of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. The final product – precious world-renowned wines are a result of the combined effects of soil, orientation, climate and cultivation practises as well as history and commerce. This is the definition of “terroir”. The term ‘sparkling wine’ literally covers all other carbonated wine, wherever it comes from and however its made.
Serving Champagne – Select Your Drink Ware Carefully
Two very different styles of glass have been synonymous with champagne throughout history – the ‘flute’ and the ‘coupe’. The flute – a tall slender aesthetic style of glass that dates back to Gallo-Roman times was popularised as ‘the glass of fashion’ at the court of Charles II in England by the exiled bon vivant aristocrat Saint-Évremond, because it showcased the natural effervescence of champagne rather splendidly and also kept any deposit at the bottom (this was before champagnes were properly disgorged).
The other style of glass, the coupe (originally called a ‘tazza’) – a broad, flat, short-stemmed saucer-shaped glass was created in 1663 by Venetian glass-makers at the Duke of Buckingham’s factory in Greenwich. Legend has it that the most famous versions of the coupe were modelled and moulded in Sèvres porcelain on the breasts of Madame Pompadour (Louis XV’s mistress) and Marie-Antoinette (Louis XVI’s wife). Certainly, this style of champagne glass was forever immortalised in the general public’s mind by the romantic stars of the silver screen.
