Bargain Bolly – It’s Manic Monday

Putting the words “cheap” and”champagne” in the same sentence would normally be seen as a contradiction in terms – pure and simple, but we live in extraordinary times. On Monday 23rd November 2009 if you’re lucky enough to live within reasonable traveling distance of a major UK supermarket I suggest you head down there in your car pronto (or borrow someone else’s) to stock up on some of the best bubbly around at 50% discount. Bollinger special cuvee is much more than a non-vintage champagne – its a truely luxurious multi-vintage cuvee which is a cut above the standard offerings. As the champagne price wars heat up and the major supermarkets all compete for customers(and in turn champagne producers large and small rise to the challenge of offloading excess stock) you’ll be able to find many big brands like Bolly on sale at less than $40. This is a godsend for Christmas and great news for one of champagne’s largest consumer markets, but understandably the champenois aren’t amused.

“We deplore this practice because the price is part of the dream,” Daniel Lorson, spokesman for the CIVC (Champagne Producers’ Professional Committee), explained in a recent interview with The Times. “By cutting the price, you destroy the dream. We’re being treated like washing powder and that does not improve the image of champagne.”<

Although here in the lucky country we’re too far away from the action and too small a market to access such deep discounts, If you pop into Dan Murphy’s this week you can still pick up a 6 pack of Bollinger for the bargain price of only $66.40 a bottle – but make sure you check the packaging to see that its an official import by recognised agent Fine Wine Partners – otherwise you may find yourself with a ‘grey’ import thats travelled round the globe a few times before arriving on your supermarket shelf(which means it could easily be in less than the freshest condition). Check my twitter account @champagnejayne or my facebook fan page to access a photo comparison of the different packaging before you shop.

Happy hunting! and let me know if you find any other bubbly bargains. Cheers!
